In the past month or so I’ve been seeing news about work from home and home business scams in press articles from around the country and internationally.

Fresno; Houston; Scottsboro, Alabama; Philadelphia; Florida; Scotland – I can hardly scan the headlines for news about home business and work from home opportunities without running into articles about scams.

I even saw something in a UK paper talking about how some companies have been accused of using online games as lead generation scams!

That’s right. Online gaming. Forget looking for a legitimate business opportunity – now we’ve even got pasty-faced geeks turning online games into scams.

With all this negative news, I wanted to take a minute to remind you that there are a lot of legitimate home business opportunities out there. I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in if there weren’t legitimate, legal ways to make money from home.

My team wouldn’t be rocking the Internet marketing world if you couldn’t make good money online.

But you know and I know that there are dishonest jerks out there. We also know that the problem isn’t limited to the Internet.

With that in mind, here’s a reminder of what you need to do when you’re looking for home business opportunities:

• First, do your research. You might be shocked to know how many people fail on this. It’s a human thing to see something shiny and want to grab it. I get that. But you could gold-plate garbage if you wanted to. It would be shiny – and it would still be garbage.

• Use The Force Report. I’m updating information about home business opportunities all the time. I’ll tell you what works and what doesn’t.

• Here are some guidelines for your research outside of The Force Report: how long has this opportunity been around? What are other people saying about it? What can you find out about the people behind it? Researching Internet opportunities is no time to be shy. Ask hard questions. Expect answers.

• You don’t have to do it all alone. Find a mentor you can trust to help you find the right home business opportunities for you. You’ll need to do some research to find the right mentor, but after you’ve found him or her, everything else is relatively easy.

To sum it up: yes, there are scams out there. There are dishonest jerks on the Internet just like there are dishonest jerks all over in the offline world. It’s your responsibility to guard yourself against them.
